Partners With Gazit Brasil for Events in 2021 – The Esports Observer

Online chess platform has partnered with the Brazilian branch of the shopping centers operator Gazit Globe for events throughout 2021. Through the deal, Gazit will be the broadcast partner and hold the naming rights for any co-developed event in the region. Although the first tournaments will be online, the plan, as the COVID-19 pandemic gets under control, is that Gazit’s shopping centers become the official venues for in-person events in Brazil.

The Esports Observer spoke with Nick Barton, the director of business development from, about the deal: “Brazil is quickly becoming one of our most critical regions and we couldn’t have found a more fitting partner to grow chess in Brazil than Gazit. Having the opportunity to launch major, engaging esports-style chess events in 2021 for fans from around Brazil and beyond is a significant step forward in establishing chess as a major part of the Brazilian esports landscape.”

Digital Strategies Coordinator at Gazit Brasil Luca Inglese also spoke to TEO, explaining what made the shopping centers company reach for a partnership: “Ever since the coronavirus pandemic broke out, Gazit started looking for new ways to strengthen its relationship with customers, by providing safe and innovative alternatives of entertainment. Launching our own eSports platform and promoting online events is a natural step in our strategy to bring our community even closer together.”

Speaking about the possibility of in-person events, Inglese revealed that the steps from Gazit in Brazil may be replicated by the company around the world. “All our current events are held online to preserve our stakeholders’ integrity and wellbeing. However, we plan on having in-person events as soon as all safety and health conditions allow us to do so. Gazit is one of the leading real estate companies worldwide and we are looking forward to hosting live events in our properties around the globe.”

Inglese also revealed that the success of Netflix’s show The Queen’s Gambit played an important role in choosing chess for Gazit’s entrance at the competitive circuit, as “we are seeing an enormous hype involving Chess, especially in Brazil, because of “The Queen´s Gambit” and Gazit soon started to plan how we could leverage this hype to host an event centered around Chess in our eSports platform. Being a fan of the sport myself, it was an easy decision to reach out to the largest Chess platform in the world earlier this year to discuss how we could work together.”

The first co-produced Gazit and event is scheduled on the weekend of Feb. 12, 2021. has been increasing its awareness with esports since earlier this year when it organized its first tournament on Twitch, the Pogchamps. Barton says that “multiple elite events are being planned which will take place over the course of 2021.”
