New World of Warcraft Expansion Supercharges Viewership – Weekly Twitch Top 10s, Nov. 23 – 29 – The Esports Observer

As is typically the case with cyclical releases, a new expansion for World of Warcraft has breathed new life into the title on Twitch. Fans turned up in droves just to wait alongside their favorite streamers for the official game update and to be allowed into the game’s new realm.

Twitch’s Top Channel – Gaules

Over the weekend, tournament operator BLAST qualified two teams for its Fall Final event through a Fall Showdown tournament. While the event’s main broadcast barely squeaked through into the Top 10, Portuguese-language broadcast channel Gaules topped the charts with 4.12M hours watched. While Gaules has been a fixture in the Top 10 due to the popularity of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive tournaments among a Portuguese-speaking audience, his viewership has been boosted significantly by a move to a 24-hour broadcast cycle that includes replays of competition broadcasts.

Also of note from last week was the rise of Asmongold – consistently the most popular World of Warcraft streamer during big events since the launch of WoW Classic last year. WoW will continue to drive viewership this month, particularly when the Race to World First kicks off in a few weeks.

Twitch’s Top Content – Just Chatting

While Just Chatting remains uncontested, League of Legends was kicked out of its familiar second-place slot by the release of World of Warcraft’s latest expansion. According to Twitch viewership reporter Max Miceli, Asmongold’s stream had reached 85K viewers hours before the new expansion had even officially been released. Once viewers and players have consumed the new content, WoW will return to a middle-of-the-pack title on Twitch, but for at least the next month, the game will remain a contender.

While WoW surged, the recent darling of Twitch, Among Us, continued its decline. The game fell another 3M hours watched this week to 13.49M, dropping to sixth place. Without a significant infusion of new content, it appears the trend may finally be on its way out.
