Twenty Schools to Compete in First HBCU Esports Homecoming Classic Event

The inaugural HBCU Esports Homecoming Classic will see teams from 20 Historically Black Colleges and Universities compete in NBA 2K21 and Madden NFL esports tournaments in an all online event on Saturday at 4 p.m. EST. Up for grabs is $5K USD in scholarship and prize money and a tournament championship. Twitch and Zaxby’s are the presenting partners for the event, with Twitch serving as the exclusive live streaming music partner.

This tournament event is the first collaboration from The Yard: HBCU Esports Alliance/HEA and CSL Esports partnership and will include live performances by hip-hop and gaming legend Soulja Boy and be hosted by radio/tv personality Audley “Fly Guy DC” Feemster Jr.  

The HBCU Esports Homecoming Classic starts at 4 p.m. EST with the NBA2K21 Championship matches, to be followed by the halftime show beginning at approximately 6 p.m. After the half-time performance, the Madden NFL 21 Championship matches will begin. 

The Homecoming Classic comes in part from ‘The Yard’ which “commemorates the rich legacy of HBCU campus life.” The HEA and CSL Esports are working closely with HBCUs “to provide an understanding of the esports ecosystem, the vast opportunities within it, as well as bring both casual and serious competitive engagement for their students.”
